Component Details
Rod Blanks
The backbone of every build. Blanks are selected based on the target species, fishing technique, and angler preference — graphite for sensitivity, fiberglass for forgiveness.
The blank is the most important decision in any rod build. It determines how sensitive, powerful, and responsive your rod will be. OBG uses three blank families — each with a specific purpose.
| IM7 Graphite | High-modulus graphite. The most sensitive material available — the lightest tap transmits into your hand. Lightweight, fast action, excellent for finesse fishing. Best for walleye, perch, and crappie. |
| Carbon Composite | A blend of graphite and fiberglass. Balances sensitivity with durability. More forgiving than pure graphite — great all-around choice for multi-species builds or a first custom rod. |
| Solid Fiberglass | The most durable option. Slower, parabolic action that loads deeply through the blank. Excellent for live bait presentations and heavier jigging. Hard to break — ideal for panfish, kids, and beginners. |

Guides & Frames
Guides are chosen for their insert material, weight, and durability. SiC inserts reduce friction and heat. Titanium frames save weight without sacrificing strength.
Guides direct the line from reel to tip and have a huge impact on casting distance, line wear, and rod balance. OBG uses high-quality guides matched to the blank's action and the angler's line type.
| SiC (Silicon Carbide) Inserts | The gold standard for guide inserts. Extremely hard and smooth — dramatically reduces friction and heat buildup, which matters most with braided line. Extends line life significantly. |
| Chrome Ceramic Inserts | A reliable, cost-effective insert option. Works well with mono and fluorocarbon. Slightly higher friction than SiC but durable and proven in cold conditions. |
| Titanium Frames | Ultra-lightweight and corrosion-proof. Titanium flexes slightly with the blank rather than fighting it, which helps maintain the rod's intended action throughout the bend. |
| Stainless / Chrome Frames | Heavier than titanium but extremely durable. Single-foot frames are lighter and commonly used on lighter power rods. Double-foot frames add stability on heavier builds. |
| Guide Placement | Every guide is measured and placed to match the blank's natural bend curve. Proper spacing ensures even line distribution through the cast and fight — a critical part of the build process. |
With braided line, SiC inserts are the best investment you can make — they'll outlast cheap ceramic guides by years.
Grips & Handles
Grip style directly impacts feel, comfort, and sensitivity. Full cork is lightweight and transmits vibration exceptionally well. EVA foam is durable and grippy in wet conditions.
The grip is your direct connection to the rod — and it directly affects how long you can fish comfortably. OBG offers several grip materials, each with distinct advantages depending on your fishing style and target species.
| Full Cork | The classic choice. Cork is lightweight, comfortable, and transmits vibration exceptionally well. Preferred by many anglers for its natural feel during extended sessions. Premium cork is graded for density and smoothness. |
| Split Cork | Two sections of cork with exposed blank in between. Reduces weight and allows direct finger contact with the blank for maximum sensitivity. Popular on ultra-light builds. |
| Full EVA Foam | Durable, grippy, and water-resistant. EVA holds up better than cork in wet conditions and is less prone to chipping or cracking. Slightly heavier but extremely tough — great for multi-species builds. |
| Cork / EVA Combo | A hybrid that gives you the best of both — cork for the main grip section, EVA for the foregrip or rear section where durability matters more. |
| Winn Grip | A textured, rubberized grip wrap that goes over the blank directly. Tacky in any condition, absorbs vibration slightly, and extremely comfortable for long sessions. Available in several colors. |
Full cork is hard to beat for sensitivity — lightweight, natural-feeling, and keeps you connected to every subtle bite.
Reel Seats
Fuji and equivalent seats are used throughout. Graphite composite reel seats are lightweight, durable, and perform reliably across all conditions.
The reel seat holds your reel securely to the rod while keeping the overall weight and balance in check. Material choice affects durability, weight, and long-term comfort — especially during extended sessions.

| Graphite Composite | Lightweight and highly durable. Graphite seats are less conductive than metal, which means they're more comfortable to hold for extended sessions. Preferred for ultra-light and light builds. |
| Spinning Configuration | All current OBG builds use spinning reel seats, matched to spinning reel footprint dimensions. The reel sits below the blank in natural fishing position. |
| Seat Placement | Seat position is adjusted for each build based on blank length and grip configuration, ensuring balanced weight distribution through the handle section. |
| Inline Option | For specialized vertical jigging techniques, inline (trigger-style) reel seat configurations can be requested — these allow the reel to sit directly inline with the blank for drop presentations. |
Graphite composite seats are worth the upgrade — lighter than metal, more comfortable to hold, and easier on your hands during long sessions.
Power Options
Power determines how much force a rod can apply and absorb. From ultra-light panfish finesse to medium-heavy walleye jigging — every build is matched to how you fish.
Power (also called 'weight') describes how much load a rod can handle before it bends. Choosing the right power is about matching the rod to your target species, lure weight, and line strength.
| Ultra Light (UL) | For the lightest presentations — tiny jigs, micro plastics, light line. Exceptional fun on panfish. Feels every tap and head shake. Paired with 2–4lb mono or light braid. |
| Light (L) | A step up from UL — handles slightly heavier jigs while still offering a soft, forgiving tip. Great for crappie, perch, and smaller walleye in shallow water. |
| Medium Light (ML) | The most versatile power rating. Handles a wide range of jig sizes and species — from larger perch to moderate walleye. Pairs well with 4–8lb line. |
| Medium (M) | A solid all-around choice for walleye and larger species. Enough backbone for solid hook-sets at depth while still being sensitive enough for subtle bites. |
| Medium Heavy (MH) | Designed for bigger fish and heavier lures. Good for lake trout, pike, and large walleye. Needs a solid bite to load the rod — less forgiving on light line. |
| Heavy (H) | Purpose-built for large predators and heavy terminal tackle. Pike, big lakers, trophy walleye. Not subtle — these rods are built to move serious fish. |
When in doubt, go Medium Light. It handles the majority of fishing situations without sacrificing sensitivity or hook-setting power.
Tip Sensitivity
Action describes where the rod bends. Extra fast tips telegraph the lightest bites; slower noodle tips protect light line and work beautifully for live bait presentations.
Action describes where the rod bends when loaded. A fast action rod bends near the tip; a slow action bends all the way to the handle. This affects sensitivity, hook-setting power, and how the rod handles a fish.
| Extra Fast | Bends only in the top 10–15% of the blank. Maximum sensitivity — every light tap is amplified. Excellent for vertical jigging where you need to feel the lure at all times. Best with light to medium line. |
| Fast | Bends in the top 25–30%. A great all-around action for most builds. Sensitive enough to detect subtle bites, with enough backbone for solid hook sets. Works with most species and techniques. |
| Moderate Fast | Bends in the top 40%. More forgiving than fast action — the rod loads slightly deeper, which helps keep fish buttoned up on longer runs. Good for single-hook presentations. |
| Moderate | Bends in the top half of the blank. A good choice for treble-hooked lures where a stiffer tip would rip hooks free. Provides a cushioning effect during the fight. |
| Slow / Noodle | The entire blank loads in a deep, parabolic curve. Designed specifically for live bait fishing and light line — the slow tip acts like a shock absorber, preventing the fish from feeling resistance. Deadly for finicky fish on 2–4lb line. |
For jigging: go fast or extra fast. For live bait on light line: go slow/noodle. The right action keeps fish on the hook all the way to the hole.
Which Blank Is Right for You?
Graphite / IM7
High-modulus graphite is the most sensitive blank material available. Even the faintest tap transmits through the blank and into your hand. Fast actions, light weight.
Walleye, perch, crappie — finesse fishing where feel matters most.
Carbon Composite
A blend of graphite and fiberglass. Combines sensitivity with forgiveness — more durable than pure graphite without sacrificing too much feel. Great all-around blank.
Multi-species builds, all-around custom rods, first custom builds.
Solid Fiberglass
The most durable option. Less sensitive than graphite, but with a slow, parabolic action that makes it excellent for jigging and live bait presentations. Hard to break.
Panfish, live bait fishing, heavier jigging, beginners and kids.
